General Information

The Board Attorney's office is established pursuant to Section 19-3-47 of the Mississippi Code, which permits county boards of supervisors to employ counsel to represent them in legal matters. Hinds County is one of the few counties in the State of Mississippi which has a full-time attorney on staff.

The Board Attorney's duties include representation of the 5-member Hinds County Board of Supervisors, all County elected officials and department heads; attendance, counseling and representation at all meetings of the Board; formulating policies, ordinances and regulations for Hinds County; drafting proposed legislation; advising county officials regarding compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations; liaison to governor, attorney general, secretary of state, auditor, legislators, and other state officials; contract preparation, interpretation and negotiation; research and writing of legal opinions, briefs and memoranda; general civil litigation; and supervision of contract attorneys employed by the county.
